Semaglutide for Weight Loss: What to Expect
Wegovy is the semaglutide brand approved for weight treatment in eligible people. Current US options include a weekly injection and a daily tablet. Both require dose adjustment and continued review, and neither trial averages nor an early appetite change can predict your final result.

The evidence depends on dose and formulation
| Study | Average weight change |
|---|---|
| STEP 1: 2.4 mg weekly injection | At 68 weeks, 14.9% loss with semaglutide and 2.4% with placebo. |
| OASIS 4: 25 mg daily tablet | At 64 weeks, 13.6% loss with semaglutide and 2.2% with placebo. |
Both trials combined medication with lifestyle intervention. The figures describe averages across trial groups, including participants who discontinued treatment under the main analysis. These were separate studies, so the table is not a direct comparison of tablets against injections.
Wegovy now also has a 7.2 mg weekly injection option for selected adults who tolerate 2.4 mg for at least four weeks and need additional weight reduction. It is a later treatment decision. The older 2.4 mg trial result does not describe this higher-dose option.
Allow time for dose adjustment
Weekly injections begin at 0.25 mg, with usual four-week stages before reaching maintenance dosing. Tablets have their own daily dose schedule, starting at 1.5 mg. The clinician may delay an increase if digestive effects are difficult. Starting doses should not be judged as if they were the full maintenance regimen.
Record the weight trend over time and bring it to follow-up with notes about appetite, food intake, bowel symptoms, and missed doses. Blood pressure, glucose control where relevant, and day-to-day function can help assess benefit. If progress stalls, review treatment and nutrition before changing the prescription.
Daily tablets and weekly injections involve different routines
Wegovy tablets are taken on an empty stomach in the morning with up to four ounces of water. You then wait at least thirty minutes before food, other drinks, or oral medicines. A weekly injection can be taken with or without meals. The practical choice should account for your mornings, other prescriptions, and comfort using the device.
Eligibility and safety still need review whichever form is chosen. Adult weight-treatment candidates generally have obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition. Semaglutide is contraindicated with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Severe gastroparesis, prior pancreatitis, diabetic eye disease, and pregnancy plans need particular discussion.
Discuss what happens after weight loss
Semaglutide is approved for long-term weight reduction and maintenance in eligible people. Ongoing treatment requires acceptable benefit, tolerability, and access. Ask about the expected duration and the plan for prescription or insurance interruptions while care is being arranged.
In the STEP 1 extension, participants were followed after semaglutide and lifestyle support stopped. The subgroup previously receiving semaglutide regained about two-thirds of its prior weight loss over the next year on average. This exploratory follow-up supports planning continued care; it does not establish that every person will regain the same amount.
A planned pregnancy requires stopping semaglutide at least two months beforehand. If pregnancy occurs, contact the prescriber. After a prolonged interruption, the restart dose may need to be lower to reduce digestive effects. Get product-specific instructions before restarting.
